Getting There & Around

Day 1-2: Christchurch → Akaroa

Day 3-4: Lake Tekapo → Lake Pukaki - Stargazing (dark sky reserve), Church of the Good Shepherd, views of Aoraki/Mount Cook

- Weather changes fast: One day can have sun, rain, wind, and snow - pack layers for all conditions
- Sandflies: In remote forest and alpine areas, bring strong insect repellent
- Kea: These alpine parrots are smart and will steal food from your car - keep windows closed
- Respect farm land: Many roads go through working farms - close gates behind you, don't trespass
- Emergency: Dial 111 for police/ambulance/fire. Coverage is spotty in mountains - download offline maps.

- Most tourists get an eVisa online - apply 1-2 months in advance
- Best time to visit: December to February (summer - longer daylight hours, warmer weather)
