Local Customs & Warnings

  • Weather changes fast: One day can have sun, rain, wind, and snow - pack layers for all conditions
  • Sandflies: In remote forest and alpine areas, bring strong insect repellent
  • Kea: These alpine parrots are smart and will steal food from your car - keep windows closed
  • Respect farm land: Many roads go through working farms - close gates behind you, don't trespass
  • Emergency: Dial 111 for police/ambulance/fire. Coverage is spotty in mountains - download offline maps.

Visa & Travel Tips

  • Most tourists get an eVisa online - apply 1-2 months in advance
  • Best time to visit: December to February (summer - longer daylight hours, warmer weather)
  • Book activities 2-3 months ahead for peak season - popular hikes and tours sell out
  • Bring good hiking boots - you'll want to do multiple alpine walks
  • Self-catering saves a lot of money - supermarkets are well-stocked with good food
  • Check the NZ Transport Agency website for road closures before driving mountain passes
  • The scenery is amazing - stop every chance you get for photos, don't rush the drive
