Vehicle hire: Book rental car/campervan in advance - peak season (Dec-Feb) sells out months early
Driving: New Zealand drives on the LEFT. Mountain roads are narrow with sharp curves - drive slowly.
Gas stations: In remote areas gas stations can be 100+ km apart - fill up whenever you see one.
Wild camping: Only camp in designated areas - freedom camping rules vary by region.

Day 1-2: Christchurch → Akaroa

Swim with dolphins, eat French-inspired food, explore Banks Peninsula
Day 3-4: Lake Tekapo → Lake Pukaki
Stargazing (dark sky reserve), Church of the Good Shepherd, views of Aoraki/Mount Cook
Day 5-6: Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park
Hooker Valley Track hike, glacial lake views, kea bird spotting
Day 7: Fox & Franz Josef Glaciers
Glacier hike or heli-hike on the ice
Day 8-9: Wanaka
Wanaka Tree photo, Roys Peak hike, lake kayaking
Day 10-12: Queenstown
Adventure capital - skydiving, bungee jumping, boat tour to Milford Sound
Day 13: Te Anau → Invercargill
Gateway to Fiordland, relax before heading back
Day 14: Drive back to Christchurch or fly out from Queenstown

Weather changes fast: One day can have sun, rain, wind, and snow - pack layers for all conditions
Sandflies: In remote forest and alpine areas, bring strong insect repellent
Kea: These alpine parrots are smart and will steal food from your car - keep windows closed
Respect farm land: Many roads go through working farms - close gates behind you, don't trespass
Emergency: Dial 111 for police/ambulance/fire. Coverage is spotty in mountains - download offline maps.

Most tourists get an eVisa online - apply 1-2 months in advance
Best time to visit: December to February (summer - longer daylight hours, warmer weather)
Book activities 2-3 months ahead for peak season - popular hikes and tours sell out
Bring good hiking boots - you'll want to do multiple alpine walks
Self-catering saves a lot of money - supermarkets are well-stocked with good food
Check the NZ Transport Agency website for road closures before driving mountain passes
The scenery is amazing - stop every chance you get for photos, don't rush the drive
