Overview
The Dolomites are one of Europe's most spectacular mountain ranges, famous for their jagged limestone peaks, breathtaking alpine lakes, and incredible hiking trails. I spent a week solo exploring the Dolomites in summer, traveling mostly without a car. It was inconvenient at times, but I absolutely fell in love with the place, and I'm already planning my trip back.
Quick Facts
- Location: Northern Italy, South Tyrol region
- Best time to visit: June-September for summer hiking
- Recommended duration: 5-7 days minimum
- Difficulty: Easy to challenging - something for every fitness level
- Per-person budget: โฌ50-100 EUR per day depending on accommodation
Must-Hike Locations
These are the spots you absolutely shouldn't miss:
1. Val di Funes
One of the most beautiful valleys in the Dolomites, with picture-perfect views of the Odle group peaks. Great for easy day hikes and photography.
2. Seceda
Stunning alpine plateau accessible by cable car, with incredible panoramic views of the Dolomites. Perfect for a half-day or full-day hike.
3. Pieralongia
Beautiful hiking trail through alpine meadows with incredible peak views. Less crowded than some of the more popular spots.
4. Tre Cime di Lavaredo
Probably the most iconic location in the Dolomites - three dramatic jagged peaks that you've probably seen in photos. The circuit hike around them is a must-do.
5. Cinque Torri
Five distinctive rock towers with great hiking trails and historical World War I sites to explore.
6. Alpe di Siusi
The highest alpine meadow in Europe, with stunning views and endless hiking possibilities. Great for families and leisurely walks.
Traveling Without a Car
I explored most of the Dolomites without a car, and while it's quite inconvenient compared to having your own wheels, it's definitely possible.
Tips for car-free travel:
- Use public buses - they connect most major towns and trailheads
- Book accommodation in central towns with good bus connections
- Be prepared for limited schedules - buses run less frequently on weekends
- Consider guided day tours from major bases like Bolzano or Cortina
If you can rent a car, it will make your trip much easier and give you more flexibility. But don't let not having a car stop you from going - you can still have an incredible experience.
Best Time for Summer Hiking
- June: Snow melting, fewer crowds, wildflowers in bloom
- July-August: Best weather, but also busiest - book accommodation early
- September: Beautiful fall colors, fewer crowds, still good weather
What to Pack
- Good hiking boots - essential for the rocky trails
- Layers - weather can change quickly in the mountains
- Sunscreen and sunglasses - UV is strong at altitude
- Water bottle - stay hydrated on hot days
- Camera - you'll want to take hundreds of photos
Conclusion
The Dolomites are absolutely breathtaking in summer. Whether you're a serious mountain hiker or just looking for beautiful alpine scenery, you'll find something to love here. Even without a car, it's an unforgettable experience that will make you want to return again and again.
