Getting There & Around
- Getting to Patagonia: Fly into Punta Arenas (PUQ) from Santiago, then bus 3 hours to Puerto Natales
- From Puerto Natales: Regular buses depart daily to the park - book bus ticket in advance
- Within the park: The W Trek is a well-marked hiking trail - no transport needed, just your two feet
- Permits: All trekkers need a national park permit + refugio/camping reservation - book online 3-6 months in advance for peak season
W Trek Itinerary
Day 1: Puerto Natales → Park Entrance → Las Torres Base
- Hike to base of the Torres del Paine (towers) - 18km round trip, ~8-10 hours
- Stay at Las Torres Refugio
Day 2: Las Torres → Francés Valley - Hike through Ascenso Valley to Francés Glacier viewpoint, 12km
- Stay at Chileno Refugio or Camping Francés
Day 3: Francés Valley → Paine Grande - Continue to Lake Pehoé, 15km
- Stay at Paine Grande Refugio
Day 4: Paine Grande → Grey Glacier - Hike to Grey Glacier, walk on the ice (optional ice trek), 18km round trip
- Stay at Paine Grande or Refugio Grey
Day 5: Grey → Puerto Natales - Hike out to Puerto Natales exit point, 11km
Must-See Highlights
- Torres del Paine Sunrise - Wake up at 4am to hike to the base for sunrise on the three granite towers - absolutely worth the early start
- Francés Glacier Viewpoint - Panoramic views of the entire Southern Patagonian Ice Field
- Grey Glacier - Huge blue glacier terminal face in Grey Lake, take an optional ice trek
- Cuernos del Paine - Iconic horn-shaped granite peaks photographed everywhere
- Wildlife spotting: Guanacos, Andean condors, foxes, and if you're lucky, pumas (keep distance)
- Lake Pehoé - Turquoise glacial water with dramatic mountain backdrop
Local Customs & Warnings
- Leave No Trace: Pack out everything you pack in - there's limited waste removal in the park
- Weather: It changes in 10 minutes - Patagonia is famous for sun, wind, rain, snow all in one day
- Wind: It can be extremely windy on exposed parts of the trail - hold onto your hat
- Water: You can drink glacial stream water directly - no need to treat if you avoid areas near refugios
- Camping: Only camp in designated campgrounds - wild camping is not allowed in the national park
Visa & Travel Tips
- Chile tourist visa: Most nationalities get 90-day visa-free entry on arrival
- Best time to hike: December to February (Southern Hemisphere summer) - longer daylight (15+ hours)
- Accommodation books out extremely fast - reserve refugios 6+ months ahead for peak season
- Pack for everything: Waterproof jacket, windproof outer layer, warm fleece, thermal base layers
- Buy all food and supplies in Puerto Natales - prices inside the park are 3-5x more expensive
- Start hiking early in the morning - not only avoids crowds but also avoids afternoon weather changes
- Hiking boots need to be broken in - you'll be walking 10-20km per day for multiple days
- There's cell service in most parts of the park now (Claro/Entel Chile work best)
