Kyoto Temple Trail: Ancient Paths and Modern Zen

Kyoto Temple Trail: Ancient Paths and Modern Zen

By Marco Chen

Dawn at Fushimi Inari

Arriving at 5:30 AM, I had the thousands of vermilion torii gates almost to myself. The trail winds 4 km up Mount Inari, and the early morning light filtering through the gates creates a magical atmosphere.

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove

The towering bamboo stalks create a natural cathedral. When the wind blows, the entire grove sways and creaks — a sound that has been voted one of Japan's most beautiful.

Zen Garden Meditation

At Ryōan-ji, I sat for an hour contemplating the famous rock garden. Fifteen stones are arranged so that from any angle, at least one is hidden. It's a lesson in the impossibility of seeing everything at once.

Tea Ceremony in Gion

A private tea ceremony in a 200-year-old machiya townhouse was the perfect way to end my Kyoto journey.
