Driving the Ring Road: Iceland in 10 Days

Driving the Ring Road: Iceland in 10 Days

Por Sakura Tanaka

Day 1: Arrival in Reykjavik

Landed at Keflavik Airport and immediately felt the raw Icelandic wind. Rented a 4x4 campervan — our home for the next 10 days.

Explored Reykjavik: colorful buildings, the striking Hallgrímskirkja church, and the Old Harbour. Dinner at a local restaurant: lamb soup and freshly caught Arctic char.

Day 2: Golden Circle

The Golden Circle loop: Þingvellir National Park where tectonic plates pull apart, Geysir geothermal area where Strokkur erupts every 5-7 minutes, and the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall.

Wild camping near the waterfall under the midnight sun — still light at 11pm!

Day 3: South Coast

Drove along the South Coast: Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls (walked behind Seljalandsfoss!), black sand beaches at Reynisfjara with dramatic basalt columns.

Stayed in a guesthouse in Vík, southernmost village in Iceland.

Day 4: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon

Glacier Lagoon: icebergs calving from Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, floating serenely in a lagoon before drifting to the ocean. Diamond Beach — black sand with crystal ice chunks.

Ice cave tour inside Vatnajökull glacier — electric blue ice formations, otherworldly silence.

Day 5: East Fjords

Entered the East Fjords: dramatic cliff faces dropping into the sea, tiny fishing villages, and fjord reflections like mirrors on calm days.

Wild reindeer sighting on the mountain road! Stayed in Seyðisfjörður, a picturesque town at the end of a long fjord.

Day 6: Lake Mývatn Region

Lake Mývatn: pseudo-craters, bubbling mudpots at Hverir, lava field at Dimmuborgir (the Dark Castles). Bathed in the Mývatn Nature Baths — like the Blue Lagoon but less crowded.

Day 7: Akureyri

Iceland's northern capital: botanical garden (northernmost in the world!), old wooden houses, and the best hot dogs in Iceland (the locals swear by them).

Whale watching tour from Húsavík — humpback whales breaching just meters from the boat.

Day 8: Snæfellsnes Peninsula

Crossed to Snæfellsnes Peninsula: Snæfellsjökull glacier-topped volcano (Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth!), Kirkjufell mountain reflected in a small lake, basalt rock formations at Svörtuloft.

Day 9: Westfjords Glimpse

Brief detour into the Westfjords — Europe's largest fjord system. Látrabjarg bird cliff: millions of puffins, gannets, and guillemots nesting on vertical 440m cliffs. Stood just meters from puffins!

Day 10: Return to Reykjavik

Final drive back along the Reykjanes Peninsula. Stopped at the Blue Lagoon for a farewell soak in the famous milky-blue geothermal waters.

Last dinner in Reykjavik: traditional lamb slow-cooked for 24 hours, skyr dessert, and Brennivín schnapps. Iceland — raw, wild, unforgettable.
