Hokkaido Powder Paradise: Skiing Japan's Deep Snow

Hokkaido Powder Paradise: Skiing Japan's Deep Snow

Von Sakura Tanaka

Niseko: The Powder Capital

Hokkaido receives an average of 15 meters of snow annually, and Niseko is ground zero for powder skiing. My first run through waist-deep Japow was a revelation.

Furano and Kamui

Leaving the crowds of Niseko behind, Furano and nearby Kamui Ski Links offered equally incredible powder with a fraction of the people. The tree skiing at Kamui was the best of the trip.

Onsen Culture

After a day of skiing, nothing beats a rotenburo (outdoor hot spring). Soaking in steaming water while snow falls on your head is peak Japanese winter experience.

Sapporo: Beer, Ramen, and Snow Festival

Timing my trip with the Sapporo Snow Festival meant incredible ice sculptures, Sapporo beer fresh from the brewery, and the best miso ramen of my life at Ramen Alley.
