Geirangerfjord Highlights

Geirangerfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful fjords in Norway. It's 15 km long, with dramatic steep cliffs, abandoned mountain farms, and iconic waterfalls.

Must-see highlights:

  • Seven Sisters Waterfall: Seven separate streams tumbling down the cliff face opposite the "Suitor" waterfall
  • The Suitor (Friaren): Another iconic waterfall that courts the Seven Sisters from across the fjord
  • Bridal Veil: A delicate, thin waterfall that looks like a wedding veil when backlit by the sun
  • Hike to abandoned farms: Skageflå, Knivsflå - you can reach them by boat from Geiranger village
  • Flydalsjuvet viewpoint: Iconic photo spot looking down over the fjord and the Geiranger harbor
  • Ørnesvingen viewpoint: Another spectacular viewpoint with hairpin bends on the road down to Geiranger

The fjord is so beautiful that it inspired the fictional kingdom of Arendelle in the movie Frozen!

Bergen: Starting Point

Bergen is the gateway to the Norwegian fjords and a charming city in its own right. Don't miss:

  • Bryggen Wharf: The colorful historic wooden buildings on the harbor, UNESCO World Heritage Site
  • Fish Market: Fresh seafood right on the harbor
  • Mount Fløyen: Take the funicular up for panoramic views over the city and fjords
  • Bergen Aquarium: One of Europe's best aquariums right on the coast
  • Walk around the old town: Cobblestone streets, wooden houses, cozy cafes

Stay one night before starting your road trip to acclimate and explore.

Summer Driving Tips

  • All roads open: Only in summer are all the scenic mountain roads and fjord crossings open
  • Long days: Due to Norway's northern latitude, you get almost 20 hours of daylight in mid-summer - plenty of time for sightseeing
  • Ferry crossings: Many fjord crossings require ferries - book in advance in summer, especially on popular routes
  • Tunnels: The Norwegian fjords have many long tunnels - some are quite spectacular, just watch your speed
  • Hairpin bends: Many roads into the fjords have steep, winding hairpin turns - take it slow and enjoy the views
  • Watch for sheep: Sheep graze freely alongside the roads - watch out especially on narrow country roads
  • Gas: Fill up your tank whenever you see a gas station - distances between stations can be long in remote areas

Best Hikes

  • Skageflå: Moderate 2-3 hour hike from Geiranger to the abandoned farm with amazing fjord views
  • Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen): Classic hike to a flat-topped cliff overlooking Lysefjord - can be crowded in summer, start early
  • Trolltunga: Longer more challenging hike to the iconic "troll's tongue" rock formation - start very early to beat crowds
  • Dalsnibba: Drive to the top for spectacular panoramic views over Geirangerfjord

What to Eat & Drink

  • Brown cheese (brunost): Unique Norwegian brown cheese - try it on waffles or bread
  • Fresh salmon: Norwegian salmon is world-famous, eat it fresh from the fjords
  • Rakfisk: Fermented trout - an aquired taste, try if you're adventurous
  • Norwegian waffles: With brown cheese and jam - delicious lunch or snack
  • Aquavit: Traditional Norwegian spirit - try it with your meal
  • Craft beer: Norway has a growing craft beer scene - look out for local breweries

Travel Tips for Summer

  • Weather: Summer temperatures are mild - 15-20°C (59-68°F) along the coast, can be warmer inland. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket - weather can change quickly in the fjords.
  • Crowds: July and early August are peak season - popular viewpoints and hiking trails get crowded. Start hiking before 8 am to avoid crowds and get parking.
  • Accommodation: Book accommodation 3-6 months in advance for summer travel. Cabins (hytter) are a popular and affordable option.
  • Camping: Norway has excellent camping culture - you can camp almost anywhere freely under the "allemannsretten" (everyman's right) as long as you're far enough from buildings.
  • Mosquitoes: Bring insect repellent - mosquitoes can be bad near lakes and marshes in remote areas.
  • Norway is expensive: Yes, it's true - budget accordingly, cook some of your own meals if you're camping to save money.

Visa Information

  • Norway is part of the Schengen Area
  • US, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand citizens don't need visas for stays under 90 days
  • EU citizens can travel freely with national ID
  • Check if your nationality requires a Schengen visa before traveling
