Why Albania?

Albania is one of Europe's last unspoiled secrets. With the Adriatic coastline, dramatic mountain ranges, thousands of years of history, and incredibly friendly people who are thrilled to see tourists - this is what the Balkans looked like 30 years ago before mass tourism hit. This 10-day itinerary hits the highlights from coast to mountains.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Tirana (Arrival)

  • Pick up rental car (yes, you need a car here)
  • Explore Skanderbeg Square
  • Try Burek at a local bakery for breakfast
  • Stay overnight - most people skip Tirana but it's actually a fun, vibrant city

Days 2-3: Berat & Gjirokastra (UNESCO Towns)

  • Berat: "Town of a Thousand Windows" - ancient Ottoman architecture
  • Gjirokastra: Birthplace of Enver Hoxha, stunning stone city
  • Both are absolutely worth visiting - less than 2 hours apart
  • Stay in a traditional guesthouse for $20-30/night

Days 4-6: Albanian Riviera

  • Drive the coastal road from Saranda to Vlora
  • Stop at Ksamil for crystal-clear water beaches
  • Visit Butrint National Park (UNESCO) - ancient Greek/Roman ruins
  • Hidden coves and beaches all along the coast
  • Camp for free or stay at a beach bungalow

Days 7-8: Theth (Albanian Alps)

  • Theth is a remote valley in the Accursed Mountains
  • Hike the Valbona to Theth trail
  • Stay in a traditional Alpine hut called a "kulla"
  • Waterfalls, dramatic peaks, and almost no tourists

Day 9: Shkodra

  • Explore Rozafa Castle with incredible lake views
  • Chill at a riverside cafe
  • Last chance for authentic raki tasting with locals

Day 10: Departure from Tirana

Budget Breakdown

  • Car rental: $150 for 10 days - absolutely essential for this itinerary
  • Accommodation: $15-30/night - guesthouses are incredible value
  • Food: $5-12/day - fresh seafood on the coast, homemade everything
  • Fuel: ~$60 total - gas is cheap
  • Entrance fees: Almost everything is $2-5, total around $30
  • Everything total: $400-700 for 10 days - incredible value for Europe

Transportation Tips

  • The road infrastructure is much better than you expect - even in the mountains it's paved
  • Google Maps works surprisingly well
  • Parking is free almost everywhere
  • Be careful of stray dogs on country roads
  • Start early in the morning to avoid tourist crowds (there aren't many anyway, but still)

Must-Visit Highlights

  1. Theth Valley hiking - untouched mountain beauty
  2. Ksamil beaches - the clearest water you'll ever see
  3. Gjirokastra's stone streets - like stepping back in time
  4. Butrint ruins - history in a beautiful jungle setting
  5. Berat's thousand windows - unique Ottoman architecture
  6. Raki tasting with local family - the best hospitality you'll find anywhere

Warnings & Things to Avoid

  • Don't skip travel insurance - medical care outside Tirana is basic
  • Check if hiking trails are open - some areas might still have unexploded ordnance from the 1990s conflicts (stick to marked trails)
  • Don't drive at night in the mountains - sheep on roads, sharp curves
  • Don't expect everything to be "on time" or perfect - that's part of the charm
  • Don't leave valuables unattended on the beach - petty crime is rare but be smart

Travel Tips

  • Currency is Albanian Lek (ALL) - most places accept cards in tourist areas but carry cash for small towns
  • Best time to visit: May-June or September-October - July-August is hot on the coast
  • People speak surprisingly good English in tourist areas, learn a few phrases of Albanian - locals love it
  • Burek and byrek is the staple food - get it fresh from any bakery for under $1
  • Camping is allowed almost everywhere on the coast - van life is growing here and very accepted

Final Thoughts

Albania delivers incredible value compared to neighboring Greece or Croatia. You can have an entire beach to yourself that would cost 10x as much elsewhere. The people are incredibly welcoming - many travelers we met said it was the friendliest country they've visited in Europe. If you want to get off the beaten path before the crowds find it, go now.

Quality Rating: Excellent - high value, amazing diversity in 10 days, completely authentic experience.
