Transportation Tips
- Arrival: Fly into Christchurch International Airport (CHC) or Queenstown (ZQN). Most people start in Christchurch and go counter-clockwise
- Rental Vehicle:
- Campervan is the most popular option - freedom camping saves money on accommodation
- 2WD is fine for the main highway loop, 4WD only needed if you go off the beaten track
- Book 2-3 months in advance for peak season (December-February)
- Driving: New Zealanders drive on the LEFT! Take extra care at first - winding mountain roads are common
- Distance: ~1,500 km total loop from Christchurch โ Queenstown โ West Coast โ back to Christchurch
- Speed limits: 100 km/h on open highways, 50 km/h in towns. Check for temporary road works signs.
10-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive Christchurch โ Akaroa
- Pick up campervan, stock up on groceries at large supermarket (Countdown or Pak'n Save)
- Drive to Akaroa (1.5 hours from CHC)
- Explore the French colonial town, see penguins at sunset
- Camp at Akaroa Top 10 Holiday Park
Day 2: Akaroa โ Lake Tekapo
- Drive back up to the main highway towards Tekapo (3 hours)
- Walk to the Church of the Good Shepherd - iconic photo spot
- Stargaze at night - Lake Tekapo is a Dark Sky Reserve
- Freedom camping or holiday park
Day 3: Lake Tekapo โ Wanaka
- Drive through Lindis Pass (beautiful alpine views) โ 3 hours
- Walk around Lake Wanaka, see the famous That Wanaka Tree
- Optional: hike Roys Peak (full day 16 km hike - stunning views but requires early start)
- Camp near Wanaka
Day 4: Wanaka โ Queenstown
- Scenic 2.5 hour drive through the Crown Range
- Check into campground near Queenstown
- Explore downtown Queenstown (lots of restaurants and bars)
- Optional: get a Fergburger - the famous burger place, expect 30+ min wait
Day 5: Queenstown Area
- Adrenaline day! Choose your adventure:
- Option 1: Bungee jumping at Kawarau Bridge (the original bungee spot)
- Option 2: Skydiving over Queenstown (incredible lake/mountain views)
- Option 3: Boat tour to Milford Sound (full day trip from Queenstown)
- Evening: sunset at Lake Wakatipu
Day 6: Queenstown โ Te Anau
- Drive to Te Anau (2 hours), gateway to Fiordland
- Walk the lakeside track, prepare for Milford Sound tomorrow
- If you're not doing Milford Sound, explore the Doubtful Sound area instead (quieter, less tourists)
- Camp at Te Anau holiday park
Day 7: Te Anau โ Milford Sound โ Te Anau
- Early start (leave by 7AM) to beat the bus traffic
- The Milford Road is one of the most scenic drives in the world - stop at all the lookouts
- Boat cruise through Milford Sound - see waterfalls and dolphins
- Drive back to Te Anau for the night
Day 8: Te Anau โ Fox Glacier
- Long driving day (5 hours) up the West Coast
- Stop at: Lake Moeraki for yellow-eyed penguin spotting, Knight's Point lookout
- Check into camp near Fox Glacier
Day 9: Fox Glacier โ Greymouth โ Punakaiki
- Morning: Fox Glacier heli-hike if weather is clear (book ahead!)
- Drive north to Punakaiki (2.5 hours from Fox)
- See the Pancake Rocks - high tide is best for blowholes
- Camp at Punakaiki
Day 10: Punakaiki โ Christchurch
- Drive back to Christchurch via Arthur's Pass (4.5 hours)
- Stop at Arthur's Pass National Park for a short walk
- Return campervan by 4PM
- Fly out from Christchurch
Local Customs & Safety Warnings
- Freedom Camping: Only camp in designated freedom camping spots - check the "CamperMate" app for locations. Fines for illegal camping are heavy ($200+)
- Weather: New Zealand weather can change in 10 minutes - pack layers and rain jacket even in summer
- Roads: Many mountain roads are narrow and winding - don't hurry. Watch out for cattle/sheep on the road
- Sandflies: Bring strong insect repellent - especially near rivers and lakes on the West Coast. They are vicious!
- Wildlife: Don't feed any native animals, keep distance from seals/sea lions on the coast
- Water: Tap water is safe to drink everywhere
Visa & Travel Tips
- Visa: Many nationalities get visa-free visitor visas for up to 3 months - check the Immigration NZ website before traveling
- Best Time to Go: December-February (summer) for longest days and warmest weather. June-August for skiing near Queenstown/Wanaka
- Currency: New Zealand Dollar (NZD), credit cards accepted everywhere
- Connectivity: Spark or Vodafone have good coverage on main routes. Download offline maps - many remote areas have no cell service
