Destination & Travel Theme

Costa Rica is the eco-tourism capital of Central America. This 10-day road trip takes you from cloud forests and active volcanoes in the central highlands down to the palm-fringed Pacific coast, stopping at national parks, hot springs, and wildlife reserves along the way. Costa Rica stands out for its commitment to conservation - over 25% of the country is protected national parks and reserves, making it perfect for nature lovers and outdoor adventure seekers.

This loop route from San Jose covers all the main eco-attractions in 10 days. Add more time if you want to explore the Caribbean coast or do multi-day hikes.

Budget Range (Per Person)

  • Budget: $40 - $60 per day
  • Mid-range: $60 - $120 per day
  • Luxury: $120+ per day

Breakdown:

  • Car rental: $30-60 per day (4x4 recommended for some mountain roads)
  • Fuel: Relatively expensive, about $5-8 per gallon
  • Accommodation: Budget hostels $10-25, eco-lodges $40-80, luxury resorts $150+
  • Food: Local sodas (family restaurants) $5-10 per meal, international restaurants $10-25
  • National park entrance fees: $10-20 per person per park
  • Total 10 days: Budget $400-600, mid-range $600-1200

Getting There & Road Trip Logistics

Arrival

Most international flights arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose. Liberia (LIR) in the north-west is another option if you want to start closer to the Pacific beaches.

Driving in Costa Rica

  • Road conditions: Main highways are generally good, but mountain roads can be narrow, winding, and unpaved in more remote areas.
  • 4x4 recommended: Especially in rainy season (May-November) for reaching remote trailheads and beaches.
  • Tolls: Many main highways have tolls - have some cash colones handy.
  • Fuel: Available everywhere in towns, fill up when you can in remote areas.
  • Speed limits: 80 km/h on main highways, 40-60 km/h in towns.

10-Day Eco Road Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive San Jose

  • Arrive at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO), clear customs, and pick up your pre-booked rental car. I recommend booking online in advance for the best rate - 4x4 is recommended if you're traveling in rainy season (May-November) for reaching more remote areas.
  • Get some Costa Rican colones cash out from an ATM - many smaller restaurants and shops don't accept cards, and gas stations prefer cash. Stock up on water and snacks for the road at a supermarket.
  • Stay overnight near the airport to recover from your flight - no need to go into downtown San Jose unless you really want to.

Day 2: San Jose → Arenal Volcano Area (La Fortuna)

  • Leave early after breakfast and drive north approx 2.5 hours to La Fortuna, the main town for visiting Arenal Volcano. The roads are paved and in good condition all the way.
  • Check into your eco-lodge - there are options for every budget from budget hostels to luxury resorts with hot springs on-property.
  • Afternoon: Walk around the Arenal 1968 Lava Fields - this is the area where Arenal last erupted in 1968, and you can walk across the jagged black lava fields with great views of the perfect conical volcano peak.
  • Evening: Soak in natural hot springs - the area is famous for them. Besides the luxury resort hot springs that cost $30-50, there are also free public hot springs where locals go, just ask in your accommodation for directions. It's the perfect way to relax your muscles after a day of driving and hiking.

Day 3: Arenal Area

  • Morning: Hike the trails in Arenal Volcano National Park. There are several different trails ranging from easy 2km walks to more strenuous 5km hikes. You'll walk through rainforest, get close to the volcano, and have great photo opportunities.
  • Afternoon: If you're looking for adventure, don't miss zip-lining through the rainforest canopy - the Arenal area is one of the best places in Costa Rica for this, with dozens of different zip-line courses ranging from beginner to extreme.
  • Regardless of whether you zip-line, make sure you visit La Fortuna Waterfall - a spectacular 70-meter tall waterfall that plunges into a turquoise-green swimming hole at the bottom. You can swim in the pool at the base if it's not too crowded, and the hike down to the waterfall is through beautiful rainforest.

Day 4: Arenal → Monteverde Cloud Forest

  • Leave Arenal and drive to Monteverde - it's only about 100 km but takes around 3 hours because the last part is winding mountain roads. Take it slow, enjoy the views, and stop whenever you want for photos.
  • Check into your cloud forest lodge - most lodges are up high on the ridge near the reserves, with cool fresh air and amazing views.
  • After you check-in, do a short easy nature walk near your lodge to get acclimatized to the altitude and the cloud forest environment.

Day 5: Monteverde Cloud Forest

  • Get up early and head to the Santa Elena Reserve for hiking and birdwatching. Early morning is the best time to see birds, and if you're here between December and March you have a good chance of seeing a resplendent quetzal - the most beautiful bird in Central America, with iridescent green feathers and a long tail.
  • After hiking, don't miss the Sky Walk hanging bridges - a series of suspension bridges strung between the trees at canopy level, so you can walk among the treetops and get a different perspective than hiking on the ground.
  • Afternoon: If you're still feeling adventurous, you can do a canopy tour zip-line through the cloud forest. Monteverde invented zip-line touring in Costa Rica, so there are lots of options.
  • Evening: The cloud forest has almost no light pollution, so it's perfect for stargazing on a clear night.

Day 6: Monteverde → Manuel Antonio National Park (Pacific Coast)

  • Leave Monteverde early and drive south to the Pacific coast, it's about 3.5 hours. The road gets better as you get closer to the coast, and you'll descend from the cool mountains down to the warm tropical coast.
  • Check into your beach accommodation - there's everything from budget hostels right on the beach to luxury boutique resorts in the hills above the coast.
  • After checking-in, walk down to the beach, stretch your legs after the long drive, and go for a sunset swim in the warm Pacific.

Day 7: Manuel Antonio National Park

  • Get to the park when it opens at 8 AM to beat the crowds and the midday heat. The park is small but incredibly scenic - it has great hiking trails through tropical forest that opens out onto pristine white-sand beaches.
  • As you hike, keep your eyes open for wildlife - it's one of the best places in Costa Rica to see three-fingered sloths hanging in the trees, along with howler monkeys (you'll definitely hear them long before you see them), iguanas, toucans, and many tropical birds.
  • After hiking, stop at Playa Espadilla Sur inside the park - it's a beautiful white-sand beach with clear water that's perfect for swimming and cooling off after your hike.
  • By early afternoon it gets hot and crowded, so head back to your accommodation for a siesta and a cold beer at the beach bar.

Day 8: Manuel Antonio / Central Pacific Coast

  • Take it easy today after a few days of hiking and driving. Relax on the beach, go surfing if that's your thing - there are several good surf breaks near Manuel Antonio suitable for beginners and advanced surfers.
  • Optional: Take a boat tour out into the bay - you can see dolphins year-round, and whales during migration seasons (December-April and August-October). Some tours also stop at a island for snorkeling.
  • If you're interested in coffee, visit a local coffee plantation - Costa Rica is famous for its high-quality arabica coffee, and many plantations offer tours where you can see coffee growing, processing, and roasting, then taste fresh roasted coffee.

Day 9: Manuel Antonio → Poás Volcano → Alajuela

  • Start driving back towards San Jose, and stop at Poás Volcano National Park on the way. Poás is one of the most accessible active volcanoes in Costa Rica, with a road that goes almost all the way to the crater rim.
  • Hike the easy 2km round-trip trail to the crater rim - you'll stand right above one of the largest active craters in the world, full of turquoise-colored acid water. On a clear day the views are spectacular.
  • After visiting Poás, continue to your accommodation near Alajuela/San Jose airport area.

Day 10: Departure

  • You're only about 20 minutes from the airport, so after breakfast drive back, return your rental car, and go through security for your flight. It's been an amazing 10 days of rainforest, volcanoes, and beaches!

Must-See Ecological Highlights

  • Arenal Volcano: Iconic conical volcano (last major eruption 1968), great hiking on old lava flows
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest: One of the most famous cloud forests in the world, incredible biodiversity, endemic species
  • Manuel Antonio National Park: Stunning combination of tropical forest and pristine Pacific beaches, excellent wildlife spotting
  • Poás Volcano: One of the largest active craters in the world, easily accessible by road
  • Hot Springs: The Arenal area has many natural hot springs heated by geothermal activity - perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking

Where to Stay

  • Arenal/La Fortuna: Eco-lodges outside town offer more peace and closer to nature. There are options for every budget.
  • Monteverde: Stay high up near the reserve for cooler temperatures and easy access to trails.
  • Manuel Antonio: Either stay inside the park area for immediate beach access or in nearby Quepos town for better restaurant value.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry season (December-April): Best weather, sunny days, less rain. This is peak season - book accommodation early.
  • Green season (May-November): Lower prices, fewer crowds, still plenty of sun in the mornings, afternoon rains. Good value but some roads may be muddy.

Safety & Environmental Tips

  • Wildlife: Don't feed or touch wild animals - it's bad for their health and can be dangerous. Sloths look slow and cute but they can defend themselves if stressed.
  • Etiquette: Stay on marked trails in national parks - this protects fragile ecosystems and prevents you getting lost.
  • Water: Always drink bottled water, even in hotels.
  • Driving: Watch out for pedestrians and cyclists on rural roads, also for cows wandering onto the highway.
  • Rainy season: Check road conditions before going to remote areas - some unpaved roads can become impassable after heavy rain.
  • **Costa Rica is one of the safest countries in Central America for tourists, but take normal precautions against theft in tourist areas.

Local Food & Drink

  • Casados: The standard local meal - rice, beans, salad, meat/fish, plantains. Very filling and good value at $5-7.
  • Gallo pinto: Traditional breakfast of rice and beans mixed together - delicious with fried eggs on top.
  • Ceviche: Fresh fish "cooked" in lime juice - popular coastal dish.
  • Coffee: Costa Rica produces some of the best coffee in the world - try locally roasted beans.
  • Imperial beer: The local lager - perfect after a hot day hiking.

Visa Requirements

  • Most Western nationalities (US, Canada, EU, Australia, Japan) don't need a pre-arrival visa for stays up to 90 days. You just get a stamp on arrival.
  • Exit fee is usually included in your airline ticket already.
