- Cross-border travel: Border controls are minimal between most Balkan countries now. Serbia, North Macedonia, Montenegro are not in Schengen - you'll need a separate stamp if coming from Schengen area.

- Politics: The Balkans have complex recent history - avoid political discussions unless locals bring it up, especially about disputed territories.
- Cash: Many small restaurants, guesthouses, and shops only take cash - always have some local currency. ATMs are widely available in cities.
- Safety: The Balkans are very safe for tourists nowadays. Just take normal precautions against pickpockets in crowded tourist areas.
