The Vicentine Coast along the Algarve in southern Portugal has some of Europe's most spectacular coastal hiking. The cliffs drop straight into the Atlantic, there are hidden sea caves accessible only at low tide, and wild beaches that you'll practically have to yourself. This 7-day itinerary covers the best section of the Fisherman's Trail (Trilho dos Pescadores).

- Markings: The trail is very well-marked with red and yellow paint stripes - very hard to get lost.
- Water: Carry at least 2 liters of water per person per day - there's limited refilling points on the trail and it gets hot.
- Shade: Very little shade on the coastal sections - start early, wear a hat and sunscreen.
- Wild camping: Wild camping is technically illegal in most of the Algarve, but wild camping on the beach is tolerated if you arrive late and leave early.

Local Food to Try
- Cataplana - Traditional Portuguese fish stew cooked in a copper pot
- Grilled sardines - Fresh from the Atlantic, especially good in summer

- Porto wine - Perfect after a long day of hiking

Things to Know Before You Go
Do's
- Check tide times before going - some coastal sections are only passable at low tide
- Start hiking by 8 AM - avoids the midday heat and crowds
- Try the local white wine from the Algarve - it's underrated and cheap
- Book accommodation in advance for the peak season (May-September)
Don'ts
- Don't go too close to the cliff edges - erosion causes collapses
- Don't leave any trash - pack it out, keep the trail beautiful
- Don't swim where there are no lifeguards - the Atlantic has strong currents
- Don't expect everything to be open in January-February - many places close for winter
Safety Tips
- Emergency number: 112 works everywhere in Portugal
- Tell someone your itinerary - especially if you're hiking solo
- Check the weather forecast - storms can come in quickly from the Atlantic
- Wear appropriate footwear - the uneven terrain can cause ankle injuries
- Leave no trace - this is a protected natural park - respect the environment
Where to Extend If You Have More Time
- Add 2-3 days for surfing in Arrifana or Carrapateira
- Add a day trip to Lagos' famous caves by boat
- Detour to Monchique mountain for cooler weather and great views
- Extend north to Odeceixe for more great hiking and a beautiful river beach
Final Thoughts
This is one of my favorite week-long hikes in Europe. The coastal views are spectacular, the food is incredible, and it's still relatively uncrowded compared to other popular European hiking destinations. Even if you're not an experienced hiker, you can do this - just take it slow and start early to beat the heat.
The Algarve isn't just for beach holidays - it's one of the best hiking destinations in Southern Europe.
Based on a September 2025 hike.
