The Golden Triangle is India's most iconic tourist circuit, connecting the national capital New Delhi with Agra (home of the Taj Mahal) and Jaipur (the Pink City of Rajasthan). This 7-day Road trip road trip takes you through three ancient capitals, showcasing India's rich Mughal history, stunning architecture, and vibrant Rajasthani culture. Perfect for first-time visitors to India looking to experience the country's incredible diversity in one week.

Red Fort Delhi - 17th century Mughal fortress

A full week allows you to comfortably explore each city without rushing. While some group tours compress this into 4-5 days, 7 days gives you time to absorb the sights, deal with traffic delays, and truly experience each destination.

Budget Range (Per Person)

  • Budget: $350 - $500 total (includes accommodation, food, car with driver, entrance fees)
  • Mid-range: $600 - $1,200 total
  • Luxury: $1,500+ total

Daily breakdown:

  • Car with driver: $15 - $30 per day (most common option for independent travelers who don't want to drive themselves)

Getting There & Ground Transportation

Arrival

Most international flights arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) in Delhi, which is the busiest airport in Asia with excellent global connections. Jaipur also has an international airport with connections to the Middle East and Southeast Asia if you prefer to fly in/out from different points.

Road Trip Details

The entire circuit covers about 720 km by road, with each leg taking approximately 4-6 hours of driving:

  • Delhi to Agra: 165 km via Yamuna Expressway (toll road, faster) - about 3 hours
  • Agra to Jaipur: 240 km via NH 21 - about 4 hours
  • Jaipur back to Delhi: 265 km via Delhi-Mumbai Expressway - about 4.5 hours

Options for getting around:

  1. Rent a car with driver: Most popular and recommended option for tourists. Costs ₹8,000-₹15,000 ($95-$180) for 7 days. Always agree on all costs upfront including driver's accommodation and meals.
  2. Road trip: Possible but challenging due to Indian road conditions and traffic habits. Only for experienced drivers in South Asia.
  3. Luxury trains: Palace on Wheels and Maharajas' Express offer premium 4-8 day circuits, starting from $4,890 per person.
  4. Public transport: Indian Railways connects all three cities with frequent superfast trains including Vande Bharat and Shatabdi Express, which are comfortable and affordable.

Must-See Highlights by Day

Day 1: Arrive in Delhi

  • Arrive at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), which is modern and efficient. Clear immigration, collect your luggage, and transfer to your hotel. Most international flights arrive early in the morning, so you'll probably be tired from the long flight - take it easy the first day.
  • Explore Connaught Place, the colonial-era central business district with its circular colonnaded buildings, plenty of cafes, and shops. This is a good place to get some cash from an ATM and buy a local SIM card if you need one.
  • In the evening, head to Old Delhi and try authentic Mughlai cuisine at Karim's near Jama Masjid. This iconic restaurant has been serving delicious Mughal food since 1913 - don't leave without trying their mutton korma and butter chicken.

Day 2: Delhi Sightseeing

  • Morning: Start early in Old Delhi at Jama Masjid, India's largest mosque. You can climb one of the minarets for a great view over the red rooftops of Old Delhi. Then walk to the nearby Red Fort, the massive 17th-century Mughal capital fortress.
  • Afternoon: Head to South Delhi to visit Humayun's Tomb, the beautiful 16th-century Mughal tomb complex that inspired the design of the Taj Mahal. Then continue to Qutub Minar, the 73-meter tall brick minaret built in the 12th century, surrounded by ancient ruins.
  • Evening: Dinner at a local restaurant in the friendly neighborhood of Hauz Khas Village, where you'll find plenty of trendy bars and international restaurants alongside ancient ruins.

Day 3: Delhi → Agra

  • Leave Delhi early after breakfast and drive to Agra via the six-lane Yamuna Expressway, a modern toll road that makes the 165 km journey in about 3 hours.
  • Afternoon: Check into your hotel, then visit Agra Fort, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and massive red sandstone fortress that was the main residence of the Mughal emperors before Shah Jahan moved the capital to Delhi. The fort has beautiful halls, mosques, and gardens with great views across the river to the Taj Mahal.
  • Evening: View the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh gardens across the Yamuna river at sunset. This gives you a beautiful first look at the Taj without the crowds of the morning. Many travelers say the sunset view from here is almost as good as sunrise inside.

Day 4: Agra → Fatehpur Sikri → Jaipur

  • Early morning: Get to the Taj Mahal when the gates open at sunrise - the lighting on the white marble is absolutely magical, and the crowds are much smaller than later in the day. Spend 2-3 hours exploring the beautiful gardens, the reflecting pool, and get up close to the iconic mausoleum. Remember to dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees) as it's still an active Islamic site.
  • Mid-morning: Drive 40 km west to Fatehpur Sikri, the perfectly preserved abandoned Mughal capital built by Emperor Akbar in the 16th century. The entire city was abandoned just 15 years later after construction due to water shortages, so it looks almost exactly as it did 450 years ago. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and absolutely worth the detour.
  • Continue driving 240 km to Jaipur, which takes about 4 hours. Check into your hotel in late afternoon and relax after a long day of driving.

Day 5: Jaipur Sightseeing

  • Morning: Leave early for Amber Fort (Amer Fort), the ancient capital of Rajasthan before Jaipur was founded. This massive hilltop fortress is one of the highlights of Rajasthan - don't miss the famous Sheesh Mahal (Palace of Mirrors), where thousands of tiny mirror pieces decorate every surface, creating a stunning effect when candles are lit. You can ride an elephant up the main ramp if you want, although jeep transport is also available and less controversial.
  • Afternoon: Return to Jaipur city center and visit City Palace, still the home of the former royal family of Jaipur, with beautiful courtyards, museums, and the famous Peacock Gate. Right next door is Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century astronomical observatory with massive stone astronomical instruments that are still accurate today.
  • Evening: Walk through the bustling Johari Bazaar and Bapu Bazaar for handicrafts, textiles, jewelry, and blue pottery. This is the best place in Jaipur to buy souvenirs - bargain politely and enjoy the experience.

Day 6: More Jaipur

  • Morning: Visit the iconic Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), the five-story pink sandstone facade with 953 windows designed to allow royal women to watch street processions without being seen. Then head to the Albert Hall Museum, Rajasthan's oldest museum with an excellent collection of local art, textiles, and artifacts.
  • Afternoon: Choose your adventure: either visit Galtaji, the famous "Monkey Temple" built into a mountain gorge, where hundreds of gray langurs roam around the ancient temples and water tanks, or go shopping for jewelry at one of Jaipur's famous gemstone workshops. If you're feeling more active, you can take a day trip to Samode Palace or the Abhaneri stepwell.
  • Evening: Have dinner at a traditional restaurant and try the full Rajasthani thali - a large platter with many different small dishes including dal baati churma, the iconic Rajasthani baked wheat balls with ghee and lentils.

  • Transfer to the airport for your departure.

Local Customs & Safety Tips

Culture & Respect

  • Dress modestly when visiting temples: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes before entering
  • When photographing people, always ask permission first
  • Use your right hand for eating and for passing money/food - left hand is considered unclean in local custom
  • Tipping is not compulsory, but appreciated for good service: 5-10% is standard at restaurants

Safety

  • Be careful with food from street vendors - only eat where you see it cooked in front of you
  • Always buy bottled water from reputable brands, check the seal before opening
  • Don't accept food or drinks from strangers on trains/buses
  • Avoid displaying expensive electronics openly on public transport
  • Bargain politely at markets - it's expected, but don't argue aggressively

Visa & Travel Tips

  • Most nationalities need an e-visa, which can be applied online 4-7 days before arrival. Valid for 30-60 days.
  • Best time to visit: October to March, when temperatures are cooler (15-28°C). Summers (April-June) are extremely hot (over 40°C).
  • Hindi is the main language, but English is widely understood in tourist areas. Most hotel and restaurant staff speak good English.
  • Carry small bills and change - it can be hard to get change for large notes.
  • The triangle is very tourist-friendly and well-developed for international visitors. Don't let common travel myths about "overcrowding" or "hassles" put you off - this is an unforgettable journey through incredible history.
