黄石国家公园完整夏季自驾游指南:3-5天最佳路线、避开拥挤、野生动物观赏技巧、地热景观亮点及预算规划

Overview

Yellowstone National Park is America's oldest national park, famous for its geothermal wonders, abundant wildlife, and stunning landscapes. Summer (June through August) is peak season when all park roads are open and wildlife viewing is at its best. This guide covers everything you need to know for an unforgettable summer road trip through Yellowstone.

Basic Information

  • Destination: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming (extends into Idaho and Montana)
  • Recommended duration: 3 to 5 days
  • Peak season: June through August (best for full access)
  • Per person budget:
    • Entrance fee: $35 per vehicle (7-day pass) / $80 for America the Beautiful annual pass
    • Accommodation: $150-300/night inside park, $80-180/night outside park
    • Food: $40-80/day per person
    • Total 3-day trip: approx $400-900 per person excluding gas

Getting There & Transportation

  • Air: Closest major airports are Bozeman (MT), Jackson Hole (WY), Salt Lake City (UT)
  • Road: Access via five park entrances (North, Northeast, East, South, West). The park's Grand Loop Road forms an 8 figure making it perfect for road tripping.
  • Inside the park: Drive your own vehicle - expect traffic delays from bison jams and crowded parking lots. Start early (before 7 am) to avoid the worst crowds. Free shuttle buses operate on busy routes during peak season.

Must-See Highlights

Geothermal Wonders

  • Old Faithful & Upper Geyser Basin: Watch the iconic geyser erupt every 90 minutes on average. Hike the boardwalk to see dozens of other geysers and hot springs.
  • Grand Prismatic Spring: The largest hot spring in the US famous for its rainbow colors. Hike the 1.6-mile round trip to the overlook for the classic panoramic photo.
  • Norris Geyser Basin: The hottest, oldest, and most dynamic geothermal basin with Steamboat Geyser (world's tallest active geyser).
  • Mammoth Hot Springs: Unique travertine terraces that constantly change shape.

Wildlife Viewing

  • Lamar Valley: Best place in the lower 48 for wolf and grizzly bear sightings. Go at dawn or dusk.
  • Hayden Valley: Excellent for bison herds, often seen right along the road. Bison can cause traffic jams - stay at least 25 yards away.
  • Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone: Spectacular canyon with yellow and orange rocks featuring the iconic Lower and Upper Yellowstone Falls. Don't miss Artist Point for the classic view.

Summer Travel Tips

Beating the Crowds

  • Start your day before 6 am - popular parking lots fill by 9 am
  • Visit popular overlooks and attractions early morning or late afternoon
  • Take advantage of the free park shuttle instead of driving
  • Midday relax at your hotel since most crowds are out sightseeing

Weather & Packing

  • Summer temperatures: 70-80°F (21-27°C) during the day, 40-50°F (4-10°C) at night
  • Layers are essential - mornings and evenings can be cool
  • Bring sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water
  • Good walking shoes for boardwalk hikes
  • Bear spray is recommended if hiking backcountry - rent or buy locally

Safety

  • Stay on boardwalks - thermal areas have thin crusts that can break
  • Keep distance from wildlife: 100 yards from bears/wolves, 25 yards from bison and elk
  • Bison are dangerous and faster than you think - don't approach
  • Altitude is 7,000-8,000 feet - stay hydrated

Accommodation Strategy

  • For 3+ days, stay in two different locations to minimize driving: one in the north/canyon area, one in the Old Faithful area
  • Canyon Village is the most centrally located
  • Book lodging one year in advance - reservations open on May 5 for the following year and sell out quickly

Best Time to Visit

July and August offer full park access with all roads open. This is when wildlife is most active and wildflowers are in bloom. However, crowds are the biggest during these months and accommodation sells out fast. If you can go late August or early September, you'll get smaller crowds with still great weather.

Visa & Entry Requirements for International Visitors

  • United States requires ESTA for visa-free eligible countries (valid for 2 years, multiple entries)
  • Non-US residents 16+ pay an additional $100 entrance fee on top of the vehicle permit
  • No advance reservation needed for park entry (as of 2026)
