Getting There & Ground Transportation

Arrival

Most international flights land at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) near Colombo. Jaffna also has an international airport with connections from South India. As of 2025, most nationalities can get an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) online for $50 (2025 price), valid for 30 days. You can also get a visa on arrival at CMB for $60 if you didn't pre-apply.

Getting Around the Island

  • By bus: Extensive network, very cheap (Rs 5-10 per km), but can be crowded. Private luxury buses are available on major tourist routes with guaranteed seats and AC for about twice the price.
  • By train: Scenic and comfortable, especially the hill country routes. 3 classes available, book tickets in advance - 1st and 2nd class sell out quickly. The train from Kandy to Ella is world-famous for its views.
  • By rental car with driver: Most convenient for tourists, $30-50 per day. Your driver can also act as an informal guide.
  • By tuk-tuk: Great for short trips within cities. Always agree on price before departing - tourists are often overcharged. Use apps like PickMe or Uber for transparent pricing.
  • Road trip: Possible but challenging due to local driving habits. Traffic drives on the left, roads can be narrow in hill country.

Suggested 12-Day Itinerary

Days 1-2: Arrival & Colombo & Negombo

  • Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) north of Colombo. Most travelers choose to stay their first night in Negombo, which is just 15 minutes from the airport, rather than fighting Colombo traffic to get into the city center. Negombo has a nice long beach where you can stretch your legs after your long flight and get over your jet lag.
  • On day 2, head into Colombo to explore the capital. Walk around Galle Face Green for sunset, where locals fly kites and street vendors sell snacks. Visit the colonial-era buildings of Fort district, and browse the Pettah Market if you're in the mood for chaotic bazaar shopping. Try some Sri Lankan street food - kottu roti is a must-try for lunch.

Days 3-4: Cultural Triangle (Anuradhapura & Polonnaruwa)

  • Leave Colombo early and head north into the Cultural Triangle, Sri Lanka's ancient heartland. The 3-4 hour drive gives you a good look at rural Sri Lankan life as you go.
  • Day 3 explore Anuradhapura, the first ancient capital of Sri Lanka (founded 4th century BC), with massive brick dagobas (Buddhist stupas) that are still perfectly preserved after 2,300 years. The whole city is an archaeological site spread out among huge old banyan trees.
  • Day 4 drive to Polonnaruwa, the second ancient capital dating from the 12th century. The ruins here are better preserved and more compact than Anuradhapura, with well-preserved stone carving and the famous Gal Vihara group of giant Buddha statues carved out of solid granite.
  • Stay overnight in Habarana, a convenient central base for exploring the Cultural Triangle.

Days 5-7: Kandy & Hill Country

  • Drive from Habarana up into the hill country to Kandy, Sri Lanka's cultural capital in the mountains. Kandy is home to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, which houses what is believed to be a tooth of the Buddha. Take a stroll around the beautiful artificial lake in the center of Kandy.
  • Continue further south into the hills to Nuwara Eliya, which the British called "Little England" because of its cool climate and Victorian-era golf course and post office. This is the heart of Sri Lanka's tea country - endless rolling hills covered in neatly trimmed tea bushes stretching to the horizon. You can visit a tea factory to see how tea is processed and taste some freshly brewed Ceylon tea.
  • One of the must-do hikes in the hill country is to World's End in Horton Plains National Park - a dramatic 800-meter cliff drop with spectacular views across the southern plains. The hike is about 10 km round trip, not too strenuous, and you'll pass through beautiful cloud forest and grassland. Go early to avoid the clouds that roll in after 10am.

Days 7-8: Ella

  • Take the famous scenic train from Kandy to Ella - this is consistently rated one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, chugging slowly uphill through countless tunnels and over viaducts, with spectacular views into tea plantations and mountain valleys. Sit on the right side going towards Ella for the best views.
  • When you arrive in Ella, this small mountain town has become a favorite on the backpacker and independent traveler circuit. It has great hiking, beautiful views, and lots of good restaurants and cafes.
  • The next day, hike Ella Rock for panoramic views over the valley - it's about 6 km round trip with some climbing, takes 3-4 hours. Don't miss the Nine Arch Bridge, a beautiful colonial-era concrete and stone railway bridge built in 1921, surrounded by lush jungle. It's one of the most photographed spots in Sri Lanka.

Days 9-11: South Coast Beaches

  • After all the hiking and sightseeing in the hills, it's time to relax on the beach. Take the train or drive down to the south coast.
  • Choose your beach based on your vibe:
    • Mirissa: A crescent-shaped bay with great swimming, one of the best spots in the world for whale watching (blue whales and sperm whales are seen year-round). Good surf point breaks, lots of beach bars and restaurants, popular with travelers.
    • Unawatuna: A wide curved bay with golden sand, well-developed with hotels, guesthouses, and restaurants along the beach. Good for swimming, very tourist-friendly, lots of amenities.
    • Tangalle: More quiet and secluded, beautiful deserted beaches, luxury boutique resorts, perfect if you want to get away from crowds.
    • Arugam Bay: On the east coast, the best surfing spot in Sri Lanka, with a famous point break. Very laid-back vibe, good for a longer stay if you want to learn to surf.
  • Spend your days swimming, surfing, eating fresh grilled seafood from the fish market, and just relaxing in the sun.

Day 12: Galle Fort โ†’ Departure

  • On your way back to Colombo airport, stop at Galle Fort, the perfectly preserved 17th-century Dutch fort on the southwest coast. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with cobblestone streets, old Dutch colonial buildings converted into boutique hotels, art galleries, cafes, and shops. Walk the fort walls for great views over the Indian Ocean.
  • After exploring Galle, continue to Colombo airport for your departure.

Must-Play Highlights

  1. Taj Mahal... wait no, it's Sri Lanka!
    • Sigiriya (Lion Rock): Ancient rock fortress with stunning views from the top
    • Galle Fort: Well-preserved Dutch colonial fort with cobblestone streets, great for walking
    • Yala National Park: Jeep safari to spot leopards, elephants, sloth bears
    • Nine Arch Bridge: Beautiful colonial-era railway bridge in lush jungle
    • Adam's Peak: Pilgrimage mountain with panoramic views at sunrise (seasonal: December-May)
    • Sinharaja Forest Reserve: Rainforest hike for birdwatchers and nature lovers, extremely biodiverse

Where to Stay by Region

  • West Coast (Negombo/Colombo): Negombo preferred over Colombo for first/last night - quieter, closer to airport
  • Cultural Triangle: Habarana is good central base for day trips
  • Hill Country: Nuwara Eliya for colonial charm, Ella for hiking and views
  • South Coast: Mirissa for whale watching, Tangalle for quiet luxury, Arugam Bay for surfing

Local Customs & What to Avoid

  • Religion: 70% of Sri Lankans are Buddhist. Always remove shoes before entering temples, dress modestly (cover shoulders and knees). Do not touch or pose with your back to a Buddha statue for photos.
  • Food: Sri Lankan food is spicy - always ask for "less spicy" if you don't handle heat well. Must-tries: hoppers, kottu roti, pol sambol, fish curry.
  • Touts: Be wary of unrequested "help" from strangers - it usually leads to a commission-based shopping stop. Politely but firmly decline.
  • Visa extensions: If you need to extend your visa, do it through an agent - the government office process is slow and bureaucratic.
  • Road safety: Sri Lanka has a high road accident rate - always wear seatbelts, be careful when walking as roads don't always have sidewalks.

Climate & Best Time to Visit

  • West and south coast (beaches): December to March - dry season, sunny weather
  • East coast: April to September - dry season
  • Hill country: Can be cool year-round (10-20ยฐC in Nuwara Eliya), pack a jacket or sweater for evenings
  • The monsoons don't usually affect the whole island at once - there's always good weather somewhere in Sri Lanka!

Travel Health & Safety

  • Get vaccinated for Hepatitis A/B, tetanus, typhoid before travel
  • Dengue fever is endemic - use mosquito repellent
  • Tap water is not safe to drink - buy bottled water (check the seal!)
  • Violent crime against tourists is rare - take normal precautions against pickpocketing
  • Civil war ended in 2009, all tourist areas are safe today

Visa Tips

  • Double-check your passport number when applying for ETA online - immigration is very strict, one digit wrong means you have to buy a new visa on arrival
  • As of 2025, the required return ticket check is not enforced for most Western visitors
  • Extension: If you want to stay longer, apply in Colombo at the Department of Immigration - go early (before 7:30AM) to beat the queues
